Wind vehicle

MATERIALS

TOOLS

5 to 6 mm diameter straws

A square cross section empty plastic bottle

Wheels (e.g. plastic bottle lids)

Bamboo-sticks

Rubber bands

A paper clip

Insulation tape

Adhesive (Super glue)

A pair of pliers

A pair of scissors

Thin metal wire or string

A drilling tool or a compass needle

I. Overview of the body

II. How to make beams and bars

Prepare following length straws.  You need 7 flexible plastic drinking straws and four flexible parts of straws to make spacers.

4.5cm straw (4 pieces)

12.0cm straw (1 piece)

14.5cm straw (2 pieces)

15.0cm straw (4 pieces)

Cut and bend straws along the drawings below.

1.         Make a transverse slit in the middle of the 4.5cm straws. Cut the straws about 70% of its diameter.

2.         Make a longitudinal slit on each arm of the 4.5cm straws. Do not make slit edge to edge, leave 2mm.

3.         Make two transverse slits 3cm apart from the edge of the 12cm straw

4.         Make two transverse slits 3cm apart from the edge of a 15cm straw.

5.         Make a transverse slit 2cm apart from the edge of two 15cm straws.

6.         Make a slit in the middle of a 15cm straw.

7.         Use 14.5cm straws as lower beams.

III. Body assembly

When you assemble the body, insert the longitudinally slit parts into proper straws as the following drawing shows.  If it is difficult to insert the slit parts, make the slit deeper.  After you make a proper symmetrical body you can apply very small amount of super glue on apices of straws but do not drop glue in the front bar and the rear bar.

1. Insert joints into the upper holes of rear upper beams

2. Insert the free arms of the joints connected to the rear upper beams into the free ends of the front upper beams

3. Insert the short arms of the front upper beams into the lower beams

4. Insert jointsf arms into free ends of the lower beams and free ends of the rear upper beams.

5. Insert slit ends of front bar into the ends of front upper beams.

6. Insert slit ends of rear bar into the lower beams.

IV Engine unit

Prepare following items

A plastic straw

A plastic propeller (cut from square cross section plastic bottle, check the shape in the pictures)

A bead, a plastic disc, a paper clip, two rubber bands,

5cm bamboo stick, copper wire or string

A pair of compasses and a piece of wood

1. Make a hole with compass needle in the middle of the propeller.

2. Insert hook like clip wire into the plastic disc and the bead.

3. Bend the wire like the picture above.

4. Make a hole on the propeller and insert the free end of the wire.

5. Bend the free end of the wire like the pictures and fix the wire on the propeller.

6. Prepare the straw, rubber bands and a bamboo stick.

7. Make two V shape cut on an end of the straw.

8. Hook rubber bands with the wire and pass in the straw.

9. Fix the rubber band with the bamboo stick.

V Final assembly

Fix the engine unit with strips of insulation tape.

Make wheels from your daily items such as plastic bottle lids and corks and paper boards.

Hold the upper part of the engine straw with your left hand and wind up the rubber bands by rotating the propeller clockwise with your right forefinger. Put the vehicle gently on a flat floor and release the propeller.
