An explanation sheet for making
a RUBBER BAND HELICOPTER

Materials and tools
  • Two plastic cups (upper and lower rotor)
  • Insulation tape
  • A rubber band
  • Plastic sheet cut out from Fanta plastic bottle
  • An office clip
  • A bead which has bigger diameter hole than clip wire diameter
  • A wire or string
  • A bamboo stick
  • A plastic straw (approx. 6mm in diameter)

  • A ruler
  • A cutter
  • A compass
  • A marker
  • A pair of scissors
  • One or two pair of pliers
  • A pair of nippers
  • A piece of wood Method

Method
1 Draw a circle in 70mm diameter and divide the centre into same angle (45°) with 4 straight lines.

2 Put upper and lower rotor on the circle one by one. 3 Mark the edge of the cup on the lines with a marker.

4 Make eight straight slits to the bottom of the cup with a pair of scissors.

5 Cut off outer edges of rotors. Compare the angles of the folded wings between upper and lower rotors!
6 Fold each upper rotor wing. Make sure to lap the circumference of the bottom of the cup and each folded wing parallel.

7 Fold wings of lower rotor. Fold the wings different direction compared to the upper rotor. 8 Finished upper rotor (yellow) and lower rotor (blue)
9 In order to make the body helicopter cut a plastic straw in 12cm length.

10 Make two V shape cuts on opposite edges of the straw. 11 This end becomes lower edge of the body.

12 In order to make a rubber band stopper. Cut bamboo stick with a cutter then make a 2cm stick

13 Make a circular plastic sheet in 14 to 15 mm diameter from a strong Fanta plastic bottle then make a hole in the centre of the sheet with a compass needle. The hole should be bigger than the diameter of the clip wire.

14 Unfold an office clip and cut it into two wires with nippers. 15 Take one piece of wire then make a small hook with pliers. 16 Pass the hooked wire through the plastic circular sheet and a bead.

17 Make a hole with the compass needle in the centre of the upper rotor.

18 Pass the hooked wire through the hole. 19 Bend the wire in 90 degree twice with pliers.
20 Make a hole with needle in order to pass through end of the wire. 21 Pass the end of the wire through the hole 22 On the opposite side of the upper rotor bend the end of the wire.

23 The hooked wire is fixed on the upper rotor.

24 Make six slit in the centre of the lower rotor as above pictures shows. 25 Make two 9mm x 50mm insulation tape slips

26 Make lower rotor stopper with a tape slip. 27 Push a sharpen pencil in the centre of the slits from the back side of the lower rotor. After removing the pencil, push the straw through the rotor until it stops at the stopper.

28 Wind and stick another slip around upper part of the lower rotor. 29 Hook a rubber band with a wire or connect a string with the rubber band. 30 Connect the rubber band with hooked wire of the upper rotor then pass the wire through the straw.

31 Fix the rubber band with bamboo stick stopper and remove the wire or the string. 32 Hold the upper rotor with your right hand and rotate the straw anticlockwise with left hand more than 50 times. 33 After winding the rubber band, hold the helicopter vertically and release it into the air.
